Kirby researches his novels extensively to give his readers the kind of realism and authenticity they have come to demand of him. He has been a police officer, security guard, wildland firefighter, and is now a firefighter with the city of Pocatello, Idaho. He is married to his wife of sixteen years, Debbie, and they are raising four children. Jamie Jonas, Kirbys older brother, is also a product of the West. He, like Kirby, is an artist, and they rendered the cover of Disciples of the Wind together. Jamie is a social security agent in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and is married to his wife from Peru, Susanna, and raised their daughter Andrea.
